Superb mountain scenery, close enough to touch: amidst the spectacular backdrop of the Jungfrau mountain range and in front of the Eiger dominating the landscape, lies the glacier village of Grindelwald nestled in a valley basin in the unspoiled Alpine landscape of the Bernese Oberland.
With its lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere, the picturesque Alpine village seems to have been created from a postcard - with the imposing, world-famous and ice-crowned peaks of the Wetterhorn (3692 metres), Schreckhorn (4078 metres), Finsteraarhorn (4273 metres), Eiger (3967 metres), Mönch (4099 metres) and Jungfrau (4158 metres) as the perfect backdrop. The area of the municipality of Grindelwald extends from 720 metres to 4107 metres. The village itself lies at an altitude of 1050 metres.
With colossal force the famous Eiger north face rises into the sky. No other mountain is surrounded by so many dramas and myths. Summits and glaciers have determined the history of Grindelwald. Surrounded by the majesty of the mountains, Grindelwald is the gateway to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe World Heritage Site, which lies at an altitude of 3454 metres.
This location makes Grindelwald one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in Switzerland and the largest ski resort in the Jungfrau Region. Even James Bond took to the skiers in the region: the Schilthorn (2971 metres) near Mürren was the setting for the thriller "In Her Majesty's Secret Service" in 1969.
Thanks to the magnificent panorama and the glaciers that once reached the valley basin, Grindelwald attracted visitors from the middle of the 19th century onwards. After the first ascent of the Eiger - over the western flank - in 1858, the first winter season took place in Grindelwald in 1888. The first public aerial cable way in the Swiss Alps was built in 1908 on the Wetterhorn near Grindelwald and in 1912 the Jungfrau Railway finally went into operation.
Together with Wengen, Grindelwald offers 103 kilometres of marked pistes, the famous "Dreigestirn" always in view; Grindelwald-First - the snowboarders' favourite area - offers 49 kilometres of pistes, and the Jungfrau Ski Region scores with a total of 210 kilometres of excellently groomed pistes from easy to challenging descents. Without doubt the most spectacular piste in the region is the Lauberhorn run near Wengen. The Jungfrau Region - an exceptional winter sports arena!
The fastest lift in Switzerland takes you up to the viewing terrace of the Sphinx on the Jungfraujoch. At an altitude of 3571 metres, this is the best place to take a look at the mighty Aletsch Glacier and the four thousand metres peaks - Mönch, Fiescherhorn, Aletschhorn, Jungfrau.
Visit the Avocado Bar in the village centre for après-ski - great drinks and a large panorama terrace. And if you don't want to dine in your luxury Alpine chalet, dine in the Glacier Restaurant - seasonal cuisine, magical views of the Eiger north face included! Afterwards, get a taste of Grindelwald nightlife. Club lovers can dance the night away at the Mescalero Disco. The legendary Gepsi Bar comes with live music, it's the best place to celebrate the "Swiss Country Lifestyle".
