Early spring in the Balearics reveals a different side to these sunny beach islands. The weather is still wonderfully warm for Europe. As January passes into February the island’s estimated 4 – 5 million almond trees blossom. This sea of delicate pinks and whites is an awe-inspiring sight. The heart of almond-growing country is around Sant Llorenc, Manacor, and Son Servera, where you can enjoy the Fira de la flor d’ametler, the island’s annual almond blossom festival. In 2018 it takes place on Sunday, February 4th, and you can enjoy folk traditions and costumes while tasting the harvest from those famous trees – a traditional gato d’ametlla cake is a must!

It’s a spectacular reminder of Mallorca’s rich, traditional food culture – the almonds are said to be the best in the world with great health benefits – and a great excuse to explore the sleepy villages of the interior. The produce – from sobrasada sausage to olive oil – from these beautiful, historic communities is starting to have an impact on a wonderfully diverse dining scene.

Sea, Mountain and City

Mallorca’s beaches in early spring may be more suited to strolling than swimming, though hardy surfers love a spring tide, and luxury beach clubs like the world-famous Nikki Beach and the two PURO clubs won’t be in full swing, but the coastline is just as majestic and a Mediterranean sunset has extra romance before the summer crowds show up.
