11. Innsbruck, Austrian Alps

An Austrian classic, Innsbruck is youthful in character and timeless in appeal. The lively nightlife is matched by historic 15^th-century architecture and skiing that’s made it a top professional winter sports venue that’s twice hosted the Winter Olympics.

12. Chamonix–Mont Blanc, French Alps

One of the best-known Alpine resorts, Chamonix was top choice for its scenery in the Traveler list, (it’s built in the shadow of Mont Blanc) and number 3 for nightlife. This is one of the birthplaces of modern winter sports, and still somewhere every serious skier should experience.

13. Davos, Swiss Alps

The people who rule the world come to this exclusive ski resort each year for the World Economic Forum. It’s a shame that they’re too busy attending meetings and forging international deals to enjoy the fabulous winter sports, including 60 miles of cross country skiing and world class skating.

If you’d like to live like a plutocrat, book a week in Tivoli Lodge, a large-group ski in/ski out chalet sleeping up to 18 guests in surroundings that redefine Alpine luxury. Mixing traditional mountain exteriors with the latest design inside, including a massive children’s play area, this 700-square-metre space is set facing south towards the highest peaks of Endagine.

14. Courmayeur, Italian Alps

The Italian side of Mont Blanc is well worth exploring, as a very fashionable in-crowd already knows. It’s a traditional village with a real Italian taste for the dolce vita in its après ski scene. The slopes are particularly well suited to off-piste skiers and the varied skiing of Chamonix is accessible by cable-car.

15. Kitzbuehel, Austrian Alps

You may know Kitzbuehel from the World Cup, and there are some superb, demanding pistes here for those who want to try to match the pros. The village itself is charming and traditional and hosts a very lively après ski scene for a demanding international clientele.

Book into the lovely Chalet Kitz if you are looking for a very Austrian Alps experience. The chalet consists of three apartments and sleeps 14.

16. Cervinia, Italian Alps
Italian resorts do particularly well for après ski – this is one of the world’s great dining and socializing cultures, after all – but not always so well for snow. Not so, Cervinia, where a ski pass will also get you access to Zermatt and Valtournenche in Switzerland.

17. Crans-Montana, Swiss Alps

Number 17 on the Condé Nast list for value, despite its reputation as an exclusive resort, Crans-Montana is one of the more traditional resorts, with architecture straight off an Alpine Christmas card. Some of the best ski terrain and views of both the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc don’t hurt its appeal either.

Take a look at Chalet du Bonheur. Brand new but built in the local style that so suits Crans-Montana, this stunning property is as contemporary inside as it is traditional outside. 18. Les Arcs/La Plagne, French Alps

This family-friendly resort is in the beautiful Tarentaise Valley, and has a lot of British fans thanks to the Eurostar link from London. Skiing and ski tuition are of a very high quality here, but the accommodation remains towards the functional end of the spectrum.

19. Verbier, Swiss Alps

If you want to share the slopes with royalty or the biggest sporting and entertainment stars then Verbier should be on your itinerary. It tends to attract young, fashionable folks and has a thriving freestyle and extreme sports scene that loves the fantastic quality of the Four Valleys ski area. Verbier is in all year around. Located on a mountainside at an altitude of 1500m, Verbier has it all. Very good restaurants, nice shopping, great night life. During the summer and winter months a wide range of sporting activities. In winter Verbier is a paradise for skiers with over 410 kilomtres of ski runs. It is part of the ‘Four Valleys’ ski area. The Mont-Fort glacier is 3300m, once up you can enjoy the most stunning views over the valleys. Verbier is also one of the best the best “off-piste” resort in the Alps.

One of the best chalets is Chalet Chouqui, a stunning chalet with indoor pool and spa. It sleeps 18. Chalet Chouqui comprises two interconnecting chalets with over 900m² and it has with the 15-metre indoor swimming pool the largest pool in a private chalet in Verbier.

20. Tignes, French Alps

Tignes is market as a “sporty” resort with access to excellent skiing in the giant Espace Killy, which is named after the triple Olympic champion, superstar French down-hiller, and local legend Jean-Claude Killy. High altitude accommodation attracts the best skiers and the après scene is no slouch either.
