Secret Dream Beaches of the Balearic Islands

Secret Dream Beaches of the Balearic Islands

Published on 03/05/2015 by Finest Holidays - Luxury Travel

Among those booking luxury villas in Mallorca this summer will be large numbers of in-the-know German travelers. The island has long been popular with Germans, so much so that it’s sometimes jokingly called, the “17th Federal State of Germany”. They come for the weather, the cuisine, the natural beauty and very special atmosphere of Mallorca and the Balearics – with the best service and luxury facilities available.T Mobile’s German site is tipping off its readers to the best secret beaches on Mallorca and its beautiful sister islands Menorca and Ibiza. We thought we’d share their inside knowledge.

Their top pick on Mallorca is Cala Tuent, chosen because of its remoteness. The views out to sea are spectacular. Turn around to the shore and you’ll see Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest peak, and the rest of the Tramuntana range. Even the journey there, along the famous, twisting Sa Calobra road is a pleasure. When you arrive you’ll find a small cove with wooded approaches. Because of its relative lack of entertainment and facilities, Cala Tuent is often quiet, even in busy seasons. Port de Soller is the nearest resort, with the beautiful orange valleys of Soller just inland.

Cala Varques is well off the beaten track, south of Porto Cristo on the south-east coast. You’ll need to walk, unless you sail up to the shore, but it’s worth it. The rocky coast and pine forests are a fine backdrop to this sandy beach that slopes gently into the Mediterranean. You might see climbers exploring the challenging cliffs and nudists use the smaller coves here.

Cala Torta is on the north-east coast, in the center of a nature reserve. It’s isolated and the road isn’t in the best condition, but the turquoise waters and fine white sand are worth the bumpy trip. The water is quite deep and snorkeling is popular. You don’t have to carry everything with you, there’s a little bar and café on the sands.

On Menorca, the experts from T-Mobile picked out:

Cala Del Pilar on the north-western coast. This is another beach you might want to consider approaching from the sea to avoid a nearly 2km walk. The golden sands and beautiful cliffs make a beautiful color contrast with the clear Mediterranean waters and you might even have the 150 meters of beach to yourself, this one really is a secret.

Cala Macarella is well known. It’s popular for good reason, a perfect circular cove surrounded by pine forests on the south coast of the island. It’s quite a walk from Cala Santa Galdana, which keeps the crowds down. A beautiful place to watch the sunrise.

On Ibiza, the choice came down to just a couple of beaches.

Bennirras was picked for its beautiful sands and good facilities, including lifeguards. It’s just a short drive from San Miguel and popular with families.

They also head off-shore to the island of Formentera, and the World Heritage site towards the smaller island of Espalmador. These two gems are much quieter than Ibiza with almost no facilities. They are favorite stop offs for yacht parties. The Juan y Andrea restaurant serves fantastic food, and you’ll probably need to book if you want to enjoy its unrivalled setting.
